End poverty in all its forms everywhere

Facts and Figures:

783 million people live below the international poverty line of US$1.90 a day.
Most people living below the poverty line belong to two regions: Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
One in four children under age five in the world has inadequate height for his or her age.
As of 2016, only 45% of the world’s population were effectively covered by at least one social protection cash benefit.
In 2017, economic losses due to disasters, including three major hurricanes in the USA and the Caribbean, were estimated at over $300 billion.

Target:

Poverty is the lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood. It manifests itself in many forms, including hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and the lack of participation in decision making.

The targets for SDG Goal 1 are shaped around establishing economic and social protection systems and measures for all – particularly the poor and vulnerable – to improve resilience and reduce vulnerability to economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters.

Blockchain has the potential to assist in delivering many of the Goal 1 targets. Potential areas for application include:

Platforms that assist with access and distribution of basic services and/or the delivery of social protection systems
Platforms that enable fair, transparent and secure ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance and natural resources
Financial services platforms, which assist in streamlining the processes and costs associated with trading and transfer of money and access to financial services (including micro-financing)
Platforms that support participation in economic markets
Platforms that assist with the mobilisation of resources from a variety of sources and enhance development cooperation
Platforms that assist in accelerating investment in poverty eradication actions
